The finance and insurance sector for transport has grown substantially, with several banks, NBFCs (Non-Banking Financial Companies), and fintech platforms now offering specialised products for fleet operators and individual truck owners.

Commercial vehicle loans in India typically require a 15–25% down payment, with loan tenures of 3–5 years and interest rates ranging from 9–15% per annum depending on the lender, vehicle type (new or used), and borrower profile. Nationalised banks like SBI, PNB, and Bank of Baroda offer the lowest rates, while NBFCs such as Shriram Finance, Mahindra Finance, and Cholamandalam provide faster processing and more flexible eligibility criteria.

Vehicle insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Commercial vehicle insurance includes third-party liability (legally required) and comprehensive/own-damage cover. Fleet insurance policies covering 10+ vehicles typically attract a 10–20% discount over individual policies. Key considerations include IDV (Insured Declared Value) calculation, add-on covers for roadside assistance, and claim settlement ratio of the insurer.

FASTag, the electronic toll collection system managed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), is mandatory for all commercial vehicles on national highways. Fleet operators can manage FASTag accounts centrally, track toll expenses, and reconcile charges across vehicles.

Invoice discounting and freight bill factoring have emerged as popular working capital solutions for transport companies. Platforms offer up to 80% advance on confirmed freight bills, helping fleet operators manage cash flow between trip completion and payment receipt — which in India often stretches to 30–90 days.
