Used Vehicles

India’s used commercial vehicle market is substantial, valued at an estimated ₹1.5–2 lakh crore annually. For many first-time fleet operators, small transport companies, and individual truck owners, buying a pre-owned truck is the most practical way to enter or expand in the transport business. Used trucks can cost 30–60% less than new vehicles, making them an attractive option when margins are tight.

The most popular brands in India’s used truck market include Tata Motors (Prima, Signa, LPT series), Ashok Leyland (U-truck, BOSS, Captain series), Mahindra (Blazo, Furio), BharatBenz, and Eicher (Pro series). Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) like the Tata Ace, Mahindra Bolero Pikup, and Ashok Leyland Dost also see strong resale demand for city distribution and last-mile delivery.

When buying a used commercial vehicle, verify these critical documents: Registration Certificate (RC) with no hypothecation pending, fitness certificate validity, national/state permit status, insurance policy transfer, NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the financing bank if the loan is cleared, and PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate. For BS-IV and older vehicles, check the NGT (National Green Tribunal) restrictions that apply in certain states and metro cities.

Key inspection points include: engine compression test, chassis for cracks or welding, tyre condition (new radial tyres for a 10-wheeler cost ₹12,000–₹18,000 each), gearbox and clutch wear, cabin condition, and electrical systems. Many buyers now opt for third-party vehicle inspection services that provide a detailed condition report for ₹2,000–₹5,000.
